The project was commissioned by the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee (MHCC) and Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) to renew the listing and grading of Heritage buildings and Precincts in Greater Mumbai previously done only in 1995.
The earlier list required upgradation as a long time had passed since the first survey and also the status and condition of various structures has changed immensely. Also this study had acquired immense importance for future planning and guidelines to be laid for the maintenance and sustainability of these structures. There are around 632 such structures listed within the city limits of Greater Mumbai with a lot of sub listing of which the first 316 buildings were covered by UDRI.
UDRI is a premier research institute with an extensive archive and provides a platform to leading architects, urban researchers, historians, etc. The project provided an opportunity to interact with a lot of such prominent people.
